Capital’s cycle season wheels into action
Springtime means many things – cleaning at home, walks in the parks among new blooms and retiring that winter coat for
another year. For many Wellingtonians it’s also time to scrub those rusty spokes clean, don the lycra shorts and helmet,
get on their bikes and cycle into summer.
Wellington City Council has loads of events and courses coming up in the next few months to help seasonal cyclists get
back into it – from bike maintenance courses to family fun with Bike the Bays, from BMX skills courses to swapping your
car for a brand new bike as part of ‘Green my Ride’.
The Council’s Sport and Recreation Portfolio Leader, Councillor John Morrison, hopes that the Cycle into Summer
programme will encourage even the most lapsed cyclists to consider a cycle round the bays or even the occasional commute
to work on their bike.
“I think what the Council and other cycle groups in the area are doing to support all forms of cycling is a great way to
get people fit,” says Cr Morrison.
“And although I certainly won’t be trading in my Falcon XR6 for a brand new bike next month, I too will look at ways to
get on my bike more often during the finer months of the year.”
People who cycle into work on Tuesday 11 November will get a free breakfast in Frank Kitts Park, where live music will
act as a backdrop to the ‘Green my Ride’ and ‘Pimp my Bike’ winner announcements.
Bike maintenance courses start in late November, just in time for Bike the Bays on Sunday 14 December. Also in November,
budding BMX enthusiasts can improve their skills in safety on Wellington’s Waterfront –and all for free.
