Improving cycle safety for summer

RoadSafe Auckland and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) are re-launching their successful campaign to highlight the importance of sharing the road as more people choose to cycle during the summer months.

The 'Hey, we're all on the same road' campaign, initially launched in February 2008, aims to further improve cycle safety as more and more people are taking to their bikes to cycle to work, study and school, especially with the weather warming up.

RoadSafe Auckland spokesperson Peter Clark, who is ARTA's General Manager of Strategy & Planning says, "Cycling is becoming a more important means of getting around Auckland, and both motorists and cyclists can play a role in improving cycle safety by following the road code, with cyclists ensuring they are visible, obeying road rules, and motorists giving bikes 1.5 metres."

The campaign again draws on the support of AA and Cycle Action Auckland and is being promoted using motorway off-ramp billboards and bus back billboards amongst other promotional activity.

RoadSafe Auckland is keen to reduce the number of cyclists injured even with the number of cyclists continuing to increase. "Real progress is being made towards building the regional cycle network. Much of the network is on the road and cyclists are legitimate road users entitled to mix with other traffic. This campaign supports the use of the cycle network by encouraging safer road behaviour by motorists and cyclists", says Mr Clark.
