Kawakawa Bay road open

Media Release
26 September 2008

Kawakawa Bay road open

Boaties line up to be the first to drive through the reopened road to Kawakawa Bay.

The road was previously blocked by a major landslip. The reopened road is initially a single lane and controlled by traffic lights.

Manukau City Council Organisational Performance Director Robyn McCulloch said everything was in place ready for the midday opening.

“News of the road opening is getting out there. It’s good to see people coming again through this part of the region. You know it’s a good spot to fish when boaties are first in line to use the road.

“Work is now continuing on a long term solution to permanently remove the risk from the landslip so the road can open in both directions. This should be completed over summer.

“We’re also working to get residents below the landslip back into their homes as soon as it is safe,” Ms McCulloch says.

Manukau City Council has been using a helicopter with monsoon bucket to bring down unstable earth from above the road to make it safe to reopen.

The reopened road will initially only be single lane and controlled by traffic lights. However work is continuing to permanently remove the risk from the landslip and fully reopen the road along its current route.
