Tourism – A Vital Contribution to the Wellington Economy

The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce has congratulated the Tourism Industry Association on its Election Manifesto launched yesterday.
“Much of what it contains is consistent with our views on the importance of tourism to the economy and what is needed to ensure its continued growth,” said Chamber CEO Charles Finny.

“Investing in infrastructure and boosting the return from major events, for example, are both crucial to capitalising on New Zealand’s popularity as a visitor destination.

“Tourism is particularly important for the Wellington economy. Statistics New Zealand guest accommodation figures out today reaffirm Wellington’s status as the fastest growing tourist destination in the country.

“Wellington needs increased infrastructure investment if it is to meet its full potential as a tourist destination.  Not just accommodation infrastructure but new attractions and better facilities.

Improved cruise ship facilities are particularly important for Wellington with a 62% increase in the number of cruise ships visiting Wellington expected this season compared with last.

“Regarding accommodation infrastructure, the lack of caravan park and camping ground type accommodation in Wellington City is a particular weakness.

“Boosting the return from major events is also important for Wellington.  For example, the Chamber is looking at ways for businesses and the region generally to maximise opportunities from the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

“Finally, we agree with the call to boost marketing support for tourism. Tourism, along with education and professional services contribute very significantly to New Zealand export earnings.  We don’t think enough account is taken of this in New Zealand trade policy or trade promotion activities,” Mr Finny concluded.
