Ron Guthrey

The Mayor Bob Parker is saddened to hear of the passing of another former mayor.

Ron Guthrey passed away last night, aged 92.

Mr Guthrey was a councillor from 1944 to 1968, and from 1968 to 1971 served as mayor. He was strong supporter and closely involved in the development of the Lyttelton Tunnel Road, and the Christchurch International Airport. Mr Guthrey was the chair of the Airport Committee at the time of the opening of the new terminal building in 1960.

The Guthrey family is also another well known Christchurch family, having established Guthrey Travel and Guthrey Coachlines, among other businesses.

Mayor Bob Parker says, along with Sir Hamish Hay, Ron Guthrey was another statesman who made a long and commendable contribution to the development of Christchurch.

A condolence book for Mr Guthrey has also been established in the foyer of the Civic Offices. The condolence books for Mr Guthrey and Sir Hamish Hay will be available until the end of the week.
