Dispose of old computers with a clear conscience
MEDIA RELEASE
Dispose
of old computers with a clear conscience
For
immediate release: Friday 5 September 2008
Want to
dispose of your computer equipment and old mobile
phone in an environmentally sustainable day?
Then
come along to a drive through recycling event called eDay on
Saturday 4 October at the Satara Cool Store on Totara
Street, Mount Maunganui, from 9am until 3pm
The
annual eDay event is the only community-driven, recycling
event for dropping off computer items, including monitors,
central processing units (CPUs) and printers, at no cost to
the public.
The aim of eDay is to raise awareness
about the environmental and health risks of electronic waste
(e-waste) dumped in landfills.
E-waste can harm our
environment, wildlife and human health if it is dumped into
landfills. Putting e-waste into landfills is not a solution
because it stores potentially toxic waste rather than
allowing for recovery and re-use of valuable
materials.
Last year Tauranga’s eDay was a great
success and we collected 26 tonnes of computer equipment,
which is greater than the weight of five
elephants.
This year the event is being
sponsored by Environment Bay of Plenty and Tauranga City
Council and being co-coordinated by Duffill Watts. Satara
has donated its cool store for eDay.
We are looking
for volunteers again this year to help support the
event.
Environment Bay of Plenty pollution
prevention manager Bruce Gardner said there were a variety
of roles for volunteers. Volunteers were needed to direct
traffic, survey drivers and help to remove computer
equipment from cars.
“Support from volunteers for
the eDay makes a big difference and the volunteers also get
the satisfaction of knowing they have done their bit for our
environment,” Mr Gardner said. “Last year we had nearly
40 volunteers and we are keen to get the community behind
eDay again this year.”
If you are interested in
volunteering on the day visit www.eday.org.nz to register or
call Bruce Gardner at Environment Bay of Plenty on 0800 ENV
BOP.
