Recognising community safety

Auckland City Council last night recognised a number of Aucklanders for their contribution to making Auckland a safer city.

The council’s community safety awards were awarded to:

Bill Pike – for the Watch Out People About pedestrian safety project in Mt Albert
Avon Lines and Andrina Grove – for their role in setting up numerous neighbourhood support networks across Auckland city, including in Mt Roskill
Safety Net Glen Innes – for helping people in need and promoting a safer community
Dr Ian Calhaem – for the ongoing, active promotion of safe kayaking practices
The annual awards recognise the contributions of groups, individuals, organisations and businesses that carry out safety initiatives in the areas of injury prevention, road safety or crime prevention in our communities.

Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks, who presented the awards, says the winners all demonstrated a personal commitment to helping make their local communities a safer place to live, work and visit. “The council appreciates the individual contributions of these exceptional citizens.”

Chairperson of the Community Services Committee, Councillor Paul Goldsmith, says Auckland City Council is constantly working to ensure all Aucklanders feel safe in our city. “It is great to see the unique and diverse initiatives carried out by these individuals and groups recognised formally for the part they play in making our city safer.”

More than 20 nominations were received for the awards, which were judged by a panel including representatives from Auckland City Council, the Police and the injury prevention sector.
