Get your skates on and boogie at the disco
Donna Summer brought us electrifying disco, the Bee Gees brought us giant flares, and Kilbirnie Recreation Centre will once again host the much-loved celebration of disco in style – with the Roller Disco on Saturday 13 September.
As part of this year’s Dance Your Socks Off! Festival, organised by Wellington City Council, renowned Wellington DJ Liam Luff will revive the joys 70s dance music with all the classics.
There is a disco for the little rollers 12 years and younger from 5pm to 7pm and adults only, 13 years and over from 8pm to 11pm.
The disco, which caters for all ages and levels of abilities, has always been extremely popular. It features hours of music, funky lighting and skating demonstrations from the Richter City Roller Derby team.
Kilbirnie Recreation Centre Manager Nick Hawkings says several hundred people turn up each year for the event.
“It’s always a great night out,” he says. “People love to come along dressed-up as their favourite disco star, be it John Travolta, Donna Summer or Diana Ross There will be spot prizes, prizes for winning games and for best costume.”
Tickets, which cost $8/$10 and $10/$12 for the Family and Roller Disco respectively, will be available at the door. Cheaper rates are for Passport to Leisure cardholders or those with their own skates. Roller skates will be available for hire.
The Dance Your Socks Off! festival runs throughout September, showcasing the diversity of dance on offer in the city.
