NCWNZ Commends Wairarapa Domestic Violence Initiative

The National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ) commends the Wairarapa Police for their forward thinking in potentially saving lives of victims of domestic violence.

NCWNZ says that more police around the country should be following the Wairarapa’s example of looking out for the victims of domestic abuse before any potential life-threatening situation leads to tragedy.

“Privacy laws are one thing, but when it comes to what could be perceived as protecting domestic violence abusers, there is a definite need for a rethink on what information should be available to agencies that are dealing with this kind of situation on a daily basis,” says NCWNZ National President, Christine Low.

“In most domestic violence cases, it is non-governmental agencies like Women’s Refuge that are picking up the pieces; therefore it makes sense that the Police keep them informed. This in turn provides the Refuges with information that ensures their meagre resources are better utilised. Also, it is reassuring for the community to know that the Police are proactive in their care about what is going on in their own communities,” says Christine Low.
