Western beaches on track for summer
Auckland City Council has completed sand replenishment projects at five western beaches – Hamilton, Sentinel, Taylors Reserve and Herne and Blockhouse Bay beaches.
On Monday, 25 August, work is due to begin on the final beach to be replenished, Pt Chevalier – with completion expected by December, in time for people to enjoy the additional sand and recreational space during summer.
The sand replenishment project at Pt Chevalier Beach will involve pumping 16,000m3 of sand onto the beach from a barge moored offshore. The sand will be delivered in stages so parts of the beach will be available to the public at all times.
Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks says he is pleased the work is on track and the beaches will all be completed in time for the warmer weather.
“I am sure these beaches will be well used and will make a huge difference for everyone visiting this part of our city,” says Mr Banks.
The council is holding a community volunteer day for local people interested in the Pt Chevalier project to help clean up the Pacific oyster shells along the beach on Sunday, 31 August from 10.30am and 3.30pm.
