Manukau proud of Valerie Vili
Manukau city is very proud of Valerie Vili’s gold medal winning effort at the Beijing Olympic Games, Acting Mayor of Manukau Arthur Anae says.
“Valerie’s success shows that young people from Manukau can compete on the world stage and excel,” Mr Anae says.
“I’m just so proud that a young Polynesian woman who grew up in Mangere has been able to achieve to this level.
“I hope Valerie’s success will inspire many young people in our city to have high goals, not only in sports, but in education, the arts and business as well.
“Valerie’s road to the top has had its challenges, but with excellent support and superb coaching she has come through brilliantly.”
Mr Anae says the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams project launched in May aims to help more Manukau youngsters realise their potential through sports and physical activity.
“I know Valerie is supportive of this project.
“Manukau’s young people have talent to burn in so many fields. I’m sure there are many more potential future champions out there waiting to be discovered.”
Mr Anae says he would like to see some sort of civic acknowledgement of Valerie’s achievements by Manukau city and he will endeavour to instigate this.
