Council monitoring weather situation

To: Council Reporter/Chief Reporter

From: Rachel Graham – CCC Communication Team

MEDIA RELEASE 30 July 2008

Christchurch City Council is monitoring the storm system travelling down the country today, which is expected to bring heavy rain and snow to the Canterbury region.

The Met Service has forecast rainfall of between 40 – 60 mm in Christchurch in the 24 hours from 3pm today, with the possibility of snow above 500m.

It is likely the heavy rain may cause some road closures from surface flooding. The Christchurch City Council website will have updates on local road closures, and motorists should check the AA Road Watch website for regular updates on road conditions.

Steps you can take to reduce any damage from this storm include:

• Secure any loose outdoor furniture or objects (e.g. recycling bins) or bring them indoors.

• If you see any blocked drains, and are unable to clear them, contact the Council call centre on 941 8999.
