Beds needed!

On a cold winter night, a warm bed is just what you need to get a good night sleep, but for some Auckland children and their families that is only a dream.

Some Aucklanders don’t have suitable beds or enough beds for the whole family. Last year, the Auckland City Mission distributed 528 second-hand beds. The need for beds continues but we are currently running out of beds for both children and adults – single beds are needed most.

“Inadequate beds and bedding have a direct link to poor health. We are particularly concerned when children share mattresses as illness is easily transferred from one child to another,” says Diane Robertson, the City Missioner. “The Auckland City Mission is committed to ensuring every Auckland family has an adequate number of beds and suitable bedding. We currently have extremely low stocks of beds, which means some families are having to wait up to two months for a bed to become available. We are hoping there are people in the community who might have good quality spare beds they can donate to the Mission to help us clear our backlog.”

The Mission is also currently running its Winter Appeal. Donations are down from last year and Aucklanders can help by supporting this year’s appeal. The Winter Appeal is a key way the Auckland City Mission raises funds for the services it provides over winter. All the money raised helps the Mission continue to provide food, clothing and services to marginalised families and individuals in our community. The Winter Appeal runs until August 11th.

Beds as well as bedding, food or clothing can be collected by phoning 377 4322, or dropped off at the Mission, 140 Hobson St, Auckland City. Beds need to be of good quality with no rips or stains. We are unable to accept wire-woven beds. Donations can be made to the Auckland City Mission Winter Appeal by credit card at www.aucklandcitymission.orgnz, or by downloading a form from the website and posting it to the Mission.
