Lower Hutt CIB is appealing for witnesses to last night's fatal road crash in Petone in which Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald, national manager of the Police Communications Centres, died.

Superintendent Fitzgerald, 57, was cycling home from work when he and an articulated truck and trailer unit travelling in the same direction collided on the Hutt Road and Petone Esplanade roundabout.

The cause of the fatality, which happened at 5.25pm during peak traffic flows, is being investigated.

Detective Sergeant Steve Harwood, Lower Hutt CIB, said police spoke to several witnesses last night including the truck driver who was very shaken but unhurt.

"There were other people on the road or in the general area of the roundabout last night and they may have information which will help us find out how this very sad fatality happened," he said.

Witnesses are asked to call Detective Sergeant Harwood at Lower Hutt Police CIB on Wellington 04 560 2680.
