Eco design service launches

Auckland City Council is offering free, tailored consultations to Auckland homeowners and designers on building or renovating better, healthier and more comfortable homes.

The eco-design service provides independent advice on home building and renovation projects. The advisor spends up to two hours at the development site, providing tips on a range of topics to suit the client’s needs. The topics might include water and energy conservation, using low impact building materials and reducing construction waste.

The advice is designed to promote awareness of eco-friendly practice, and help people save money and add value to their property over time.

The service is an initiative of BRANZ. It is funded through the Ministry for the Environment’s Sustainable Management Fund, the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) and Building Research.

The council’s support for the eco-design service reflects its commitment to a sustainable future as outlined in its long-term plan.

“We believe the eco-design service will help fulfil the requests we receive for technical information from homeowners that have an interest in eco-design issues. This personalised and independent information on any environmental design issue will improve understanding of the basic concepts of sustainability by both homeowners and the industry in general,” says City Development Committee chairperson Councillor Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga.

The council has appointed Eion Scott to the new role. Mr Scott was previously involved in the clean heat project at Environment Canterbury, which provides subsidies to households looking to install clean forms of heating and improved insulation.
