Acting Manukau Mayor meets Police

Media Release 11 June 2008

Acting Manukau Mayor meets Police to discuss ongoing response to killing

Acting Manukau Mayor Gary Troup has had a meeting with Counties Manukau Police to discuss crime prevention measures after the murder of Navtej Singh in Manurewa last weekend.

Mr Troup, accompanied by council Safe City portfolio leader Cr Dick Quax and Manurewa councillor Colleen Brown, met Inspector Alan Shearer of Manurewa Police and other officers today at the Civic Centre.

“Police are taking immediate action to work with small retailers throughout Manurewa to reduce the risk of crime,” Mr Troup says.

“This will build on good work police are already doing in reducing the burglary rate in Manurewa by 30 percent in the last year.”

The councillors also heard about a city-wide robbery reduction initiative police are rolling out.

Mr Troup reassured police of the full support and assistance of the council.

“We have been working with police, government departments and community and family agencies for many years on community safety. This will continue.”

Community buy-in is essential to the success of any initiatives and the council will also continue working towards that, Mr Troup says.

On Monday, Mr Troup and Manurewa councillor John Walker visited Mr Singh’s family in Randwick Park on behalf of the council and city.

“We expressed sympathy and condolences and offered assistance.”

Mr Troup says the people of Manukau are angry and outraged at the senseless murder of Mr Singh.

“I hope these vile and loathsome killers are brought to justice as soon as possible.

“The vast majority of Manukau’s people are law-abiding, decent citizens who abhor what has happened to Mr Singh and condemn those responsible.”

Anyone with information about the case can call 0508 RIVERTON or 0508-748-378.
