Get a sustainable habit for World Environment Day

MEDIA RELEASE

Get a sustainable habit for World Environment Day

For immediate release: 30 May 2008

Environment Bay of Plenty is supporting an array of events around the region to celebrate World Environment Day.

The aim of the event is to inspire people to take small steps to kick their unsustainable habits and make long-term changes to reduce their impact on the environment.

Across the region Environment Bay of Plenty is challenging residents to choose new, more sustainable habits and make them part of their lives. This could include planting native shrubs or shopping locally.

In Whakatane and Tauranga, passengers can take the bus on us on Thursday 5 June when it will be free to travel by bus all day. This excludes the services between Tauranga and Whakatane via Te Puke.

On Saturday 7 June, Environment Bay of Plenty is supporting a Family Fun Day at the Lakefront, Rotorua, from 2pm until 4pm featuring activities, entertainment and prizes. It will also be free to travel by bus all day on Saturday too.

A week of activities is planned in Whakatane ranging from tree planting to pizza oven building. See the calendar of events in your local newspaper for more information.

Environment Bay of Plenty Chairman John Cronin said he hoped World Environment Day would raise awareness of practical ways we could all make our lives more sustainable.

“We want to take a lead role in sustainability in the Bay of Plenty so we are delighted to work with organisations around the region to support these wonderful initiatives. We hope they inspire people to make lifestyle changes,” said Mr Cronin.
