Council re-invests $120,000 in communities

Manukau City Council’s Grants and Events Funding Sub-Committee last week allocated almost $120,000 for various community projects.

The Citywide Social Investment Fund

Following funding was allocated to groups whose projects support youth development and groups working with disadvantaged communities:
 

·        $15,000 to Age Concern Counties Manukau Incorporated towards their International Day of Older Persons celebration in October

·        $15,000 to the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation of New Zealand towards salary costs for a Pasefika Coordinator to promote and provide support services in Manukau

·        $25,000 to the KidsCan Charitable Trust towards the purchase and distribution of “All Black” Adidas raincoats for selected disadvantaged low decile primary and intermediate school children in Manurewa, Mangere and Otara

·        $7,000 to Man Alive Incorporated towards their twelve-week Couples in Relationships seminars at the Highland Park Community House

·        $31,904 to the Parent and Family Resource Centre Incorporated toward their three year “Paradigm” initiative which offers support for young disabled people to secure their future, find work and/or establish new businesses.

Other funding

Funding was also allocated from existing budgets to support community safety initiatives identified in council’s Crime Prevention Action Plan especially those that target high risk groups: Maori, Pacific Island peoples, victims, those affected by drug and alcohol and youth at risk of offending.

Funding allocated was:

·        $26,065.50 to the Beacon Fellowship Trust to cover expenses incurred while patrolling the Clendon Town Centre The Trust has a pool of 48 volunteers who have been patrolling the Clendon Town centre and the surrounding area since February last year, six nights a week between 10pm and 6am.

Chair of the Grants and Events Funding Sub-Committee Councillor Gary Troup says “Whether they are working to support the city’s disabled community or reduce crime in the city the recipients of these grants all make Manukau a more pleasant place to live.  These funds will make a real difference to communities across Manukau.”

Funding awarded from the Citywide Social Investment Fund was agreed by council as part of the 2007/08 Annual Plan.
