Media Release

13 May 2008

By-election for Otara ward

The Manukau City Council has declared a by-election for the Otara ward, following the official resignation of Cr Su’a William Sio.

Cr Sio handed in his resignation on Thursday 8 May to the Chief Executive Officer Leigh Auton. Under the terms of the Local Government Act, the council has 82 days to complete the by-election from the day chief executive officer instructs the electoral officer to undertake a by-election.

Cr Sio had earlier in April resigned as deputy mayor after being appointed to Parliament on the Labour Party list.  He was replaced as deputy mayor by Cr Gary Troup.

Nominations for candidates are now open. Forms can be obtained from the electoral office in the council’s Civic Centre, online at www.manukau.govt.nz or by phoning the council’s Call Centre on 262 5104. Nominations must be received by 12 noon, Tuesday 10 June 2008.

Voting papers will be sent out to all electors in the Otara ward from Tuesday 8 July 2008.  Voting closes on Wednesday 30 July at 12 noon.

Council’s electoral officer John Skelton encourages all residents and ratepayers in the Otara ward to make sure they are enrolled to vote.  Applications for enrolment can be obtained from any Postshop, or by contacting the Electoral Enrolment Centre on 0800 ENROL NOW or www.elections.org.nz.
