100,000 recycling wheelie bins ready for delivery
More than 100,000 yellow and green recycling wheelie bins start being delivered to Manukau homes and schools this week.
The delivery of the bins starts in Howick and moves across the city until mid-June. Approximately 18,000 recycling wheelie bins will be delivered each week.
Each bin will come with an information brochure and a fridge magnet calendar showing all recycling and rubbish collection days for a year.
Manukau City Council Senior Policy Analyst Patricia Facenfield says the new bins will not be collected until 30 June so residents shouldn’t use them before that date.
“Residents can check their collection calendar for their new recycling day. There’s also a new feature on the council website allowing people to search for their recycling and rubbish collection days.
“We know some residents are concerned that the recycling wheelie bins may be difficult to move around or get up a long driveway. However we’d like to encourage them to give the new bins a go, if there are any problems contact the council for help.”
Manukau Mayor Len Brown says the new recycling service is part of the council’s increased focus on environmental sustainability.
“The aim is to make it easier for Manukau people to recycle more, this should make a big contribution to the country’s efforts to reduce waste, “Mr Brown says.
The new service is expected to increase the volume of recycling by between 15 and 25 per cent.
The recycling wheelie bins are 240 litres, allowing at least four times more space for recycling.
When the new collection begins a wider range of recycling will be able to go into the one bin.
Paper and cardboard will be collected in the new bins instead of being left in a pile on the side of the road. The bins will also take the same range of recycling as the current crates – plastic containers and bottles from the kitchen and bathroom numbered 1 to 7, glass jars and bottles, tins and cans.
