Britomart hotel proposal requires private plan change
A proposal for a waterfront hotel with about 21 levels in the Britomart heritage precinct will require a notified private plan change.
Bluewater Group, which is working to a master plan for the restoration of historic buildings in the Britomart precinct, received the go ahead to begin the plan change process from Auckland City Council’s City Development Committee.
Original plans were for a 10-level hotel on the site of the Seafarers Centre, Quay Street, but the Bluewater Group has cited changing economic conditions as the requirement to build a taller, slimmer structure, which is higher than the existing height limit for Britomart developments.
Committee deputy chairperson Councillor Graeme Mulholland said the project was subject to a notified private plan change because Bluewater was the primary beneficiary of the plan change so it was not in the public interest for the council to adopt it as a public plan change.
“A hearing will be held after the notification and submission process, after which the council can decide on the merits of the private plan change,” said Councillor Mulholland.
