International event highlights road safety

March 7, 2007 On Friday March 28 hundreds of international students from around the Shore will come together to learn about road safety at North Shore City’s first road safety day for international students.

The event focuses on key problem areas including alcohol and driving, stopping distances, safe driving skills as well as safety tips for pedestrians and public transport information. The event is supported by the Brain Injury Association, ACC, the NZ Police and North Shore City Council. Over 2000 international students come to North Shore City each year with many unfamiliar with New Zealand road rules.

The event is an opportunity to educate students, especially those for whom English is their second language and have difficulty understanding road safety campaigns. North Shore City’s group manager of transport strategy and planning, Archer Davis, says the event is a great way to get the safety message across in a fun interactive way. “The students can pick and choose what presentations they want to see and have some fun with the hands-on activities and demonstrations.

“The fatal vision activity which teaches students about alcohol and driving is always very popular,” he says. All attendees will receive a goody bag packed with information and giveaways, and enjoy a traditional kiwi sausage sizzle. The event is being held at 550 East Coast Rd with two sessions, 10am-12.30pm and 1pm to 3.30pm. This event is for international students only.
