Second stage of final seal at MacKays Crossing begins this Sunday

In order to conclude the MacKays Crossing Upgrade Project, Transit will continue the final sealing process along a section of SH1 at the crossing from Sunday night.

Transit Regional Manager Graham Taylor says stage two of the final sealing process will involve foam bitumen stabiliser work carried out overnight between 7.00pm and 6.00am from Sunday until Wednesday, inclusive. This will be followed up during the day with chip sealing work to ensure the pavement is hard wearing and durable.

This sealing work is expected to be finished by 11 March as long as the weather remains favourable as chip sealing is dependent on fine weather. In the event of poor weather or other unforseen circumstances, the work will be put off to the next available day, which would then marginally extend the timeframe to finish the work.

While the overnight work is being carried out road users will be restricted to one lane with a stop/go operation in place. This could create traffic delays of up to 10 minutes, but every effort will be made to ensure that this inconvenience is kept to a minimum.

The daytime chip sealing work will be carried out between 9.00am and 4.00pm. During this time road users may be diverted on to the new chip seal to help with the bedding in process. A speed limit of 30km/h will be in force under these conditions, otherwise, there will be a speed limit of 50km/h in place during the day. At all other times outside the working hours, including weekends, a temporary speed limit of 70km/h will be in place.

Mr Taylor says Transit is very aware of the impact that this type of work can have to people using the roads and he urges road users to be patient while the final sealing is done.

“We are taking care to ensure that motorists and businesses are well advised of the work.”
