Phoenix rises at Wild Bean Cafe ZooMusic
Acclaimed indie/pop band The Phoenix Foundation will be helping build another foundation – by supporting the endangered Asian rhino – when they perform at Auckland Zoo on Sunday, 17 February, as part of the Wild Bean Cafe ZooMusic series.
The six-piece band, nominated for numerous New Zealand music awards, has achieved gold sales with their third album, Happy Ending (2007), and has been described as “one of the best examples of pop music this country has produced”. The band also created the sound track to the film Eagle vs Shark.
The ZooMusic series of concerts for conservation help some of the world’s most endangered animals by raising funds and awareness for key conservation projects. The Phoenix Foundation’s gig will support the Asian Rhino Project, protecting the three species of Asian rhino, including the critically endangered Sumatran rhino – which currently number fewer than 300 in the wild.
"It’s a real pleasure to bring our music to the zoo and help what I think is a charming animal. Learning about the success of the white rhino breeding programme and actually visiting the zoo to meet these very cool animals makes raising money for the Asian Rhino Project really worthwhile,” says singer/guitarist Samuel Flynn Scott.
Jazz artist Tama Waipara will open (6pm to 6.30pm) followed by Lawrence Arabia (6.45pm to 7.30pm), playing from his self-titled titled solo debut album blending pop and folk rock, before The Phoenix Foundation takes to the stage at 7.45pm.
Your ZooMusic ticket is also your entry to the zoo – so come early to explore the zoo and see your favourite animals. Please be aware the band rotunda area will closed off in the afternoon to enable safe equipment set-up.
