Injured Man Rescued From Remote Fishing Rock

Injured Man Rescued From Remote Fishing Rock

The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to rescue an injured man on Wellington's West coast this morning.

The helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic on board, was sent to the scene just after 9am.

The injured man was found on a large rock used for fishing near Pipinui Point, north of Makara Beach. The rock is at least an hours walk from the road end and inaccessible by vehicles.

"We had a bit of trouble locating the injured man because the other people on the rock with him never indicated we were in right spot, they just kept fishing" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Dave Greenberg. "Even when we brought the helicopter down near the rock the other's nearby just ignored us and kept on fishing".

Our pilot was able to bring the helicopter down close to the rock where the man was located so that our paramedic could step off the helicopter.

The paramedic found a 39 year old Newtown man who had cut his foot on a jagged edge.

The injured man was assisted back onto the helicopter and flown to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department.

He is expected to be treated and released later today.
