Praise for Gisborne response to earthquake
The Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management, John Hamilton, had high praise for the Gisborne District Council's civil defence emergency management operation and local emergency services.
"They have responded quickly and professionally to last night's earthquake, working well together to help keep their local communities as safe as possible," Mr Hamilton said.
The council will review the local state of emergency in the Gisborne City Ward .
A priority has been to ensure that all people displaced by the earthquake have safe shelter by this evening. That has been achieved.
The National Crisis Management Centre, from which the Ministry, Police, New Zealand Fire Service and other agencies have been monitoring and co-ordinating response at a national level, continues to monitor with reduced staff.
