Carter Observatory welcomes Council initiative

Carter Observatory welcomes Council initiative

The Carter Observatory is currently established by the Carter Act and its board is appointed by the Crown. However the Crown has signaled it wishes to repeal the Carter Act and support the re-establishment of the Carter Observatory as an independent trust.

Funds were provided by the Crown to refurbish the old Carter buildings and this has now been completed. The City Council’s contribution to the project has been to support the creation of the new extensive permanent exhibition and the decisions taken this week by the Council will now see this process to completion.

The Council has also now confirmed it seeks greater involvement in the operation and governance of the Carter Observatory, and this is welcomed by the board.

As part of the reorganising for the reopening of the Carter, with a new focus on providing an enhanced visitor experience, the organisation is being restructured after an extensive period of consultation and review.
