ARC gives $49,900 to coastal projects

More than $49,000 has been awarded to coastal projects in the Auckland region during the Auckland Regional Council’s latest round of coastal funding.

ARC Team Leader Land and Water Alexandra Wilson says Watersafe Auckland Inc. was given two grants in the latest funding round, one to run a Pacific Island community water safety project and another to run a rock fishing safety project on the West Coast.

Coastal grants were also given to Okahu Haulage Inc. for the purchase of a new winch for operation at Okahu Bay and Surf Life Saving Northern Region Inc. to help run City Nippers – a programme that teaches children water safety.

The ARC in the past 12 months has awarded, from its coastal fund, $467,000 to 27 coastal enhancement projects in the Auckland region.

The ARC each year allocates significant funding to projects that either environmentally enhance the Coastal Marine Area (CMA), improve safety and navigation within the CMA, and to public works and infrastructure within the CMA.

The funding, which comes from existing licence fees, has funded a variety of projects such as sewage pump-out facilities, navigational aids, removal of derelict structures, supporting groups engaged in water safety, education, and beach clean-ups.

The ARC Environmental Management Chair Dianne Glenn says the ARC is pleased to be able to assist other organisations with worthwhile projects that help with water safety and people’s access and enjoyment of the CMA.

“It’s encouraging to know there are so many people who are keen to enhance Auckland’s Coastal Marine Area,” she says.
