Paihia: serious assault early this morning
A 25-year-old man has been transferred to the Auckland Hospital ICU with serious injuries after being assaulted outside the Lighthouse Tavern in Paihia in the early hours of this morning.
About 3am, when the tavern was closing, the victim, a local man, was attacked by three males in the street outside the Lighthouse Tavern. The victim and three offenders had been in the tavern prior to the assault.
When police arrived at the scene the offenders had left and the victim was taken to Whangärei Hospital suffering from life threatening injuries. As a result of medical assessment there, he has since been transferred to Auckland.
Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the assault and are following strong lines of inquiry.
They are speaking to a number of witnesses and are conducting a scene examination.
Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the Lighthouse Tavern before the assault or was outside and noticed any altercations.
If anyone has information they can contact the Kaikohe CIB on 09 405 2960.
