Auckland Commuters Push Rail Journeys To 6 Million

Passenger journeys on Auckland’s rail network have reached an historical high, with 6 million journeys taken for the year ending November 2007, a record for Auckland.

ARTA’s Chief Executive, Fergus Gammie says, “ARTA appreciates the loyalty of its frequent commuters, particularly as – together with ONTRACK – we are working on some major rail network upgrades for the region which, on occasion, has had some impacts on passengers.

“We appreciate that rail commuters have chosen to see the benefits that are occurring on the network in terms of more frequent and reliable services and stick with us.

“There is a great deal more to be delivered for commuters, with major network development projects underway such as the substantial redevelopment of Newmarket station, the development of a transport interchange at New Lynn, a trial rail service for Kumeu, Waimauku and Helensville starting in the middle of next year, and the reopening of the Onehunga branch line. There is no doubt a renaissance in rail is occurring.

“Once ONTRACK has completed major track works on Auckland’s rail network, ARTA will be in a position to offer commuters improved frequency of train services at peak times and further extend evening services.”

Mr Gammie says this Friday Britomart train station will be the focus of a small seasonal thank you to commuters for their loyalty and support.
