ClubMark - Wainuiomata Rugby Club to be accredited

ClubMark Success

Wainuiomata Rugby Club are to be accredited with achieving Bronze award in ClubMark.

An ACC and Alcohol Advisory Council (ALAC) initiated pilot project called ClubMark, formerly known as Sports Club Accreditation Programme, has been trialled in selected sports clubs by Sport Wellington Region.

Sport Wellington Region is one of eight Regional Sports Trusts (RST) selected from around New Zealand to pilot the programme designed to help clubs develop healthy practices and increase their viability in the community.

The ClubMark pilot addresses a range of issues including alcohol-related harm, sport-related injury, health and safety as well as violence on and off the field, how to increase membership, develop effective infrastructures, increase financial stability, improve volunteer and coaching development systems, including people with disabilities and other health issues such as sun safety and tobacco control. ClubMark is a 3 tiered accreditation programme of Bronze, Silver and Gold.

ClubMark began in August 2006 and is now in phase 2 of the pilot. Rachel Gundensen-Stewart, Sport Development Advisor, says she is excited that Wainuiomata Rugby has achieved their Bronze Level of accreditation as they have put in so much effort in attaining this award. Peter Jones, Chairman of Wainuiomata Rugby, says the club over the last two seasons has once again become a force in Wellington rugby, both on and off the field. ClubMark has enabled an improvement in its administration practices allowing the club to focus and deliver appropriate resources to the playing side of the club with very tangible success.

National and Regional stakeholders of ClubMark have acknowledged the tremendous value already identified by increasing the capability and capacity of clubs taking part in the pilot.

A presentation of the Bronze award will be made to Wainuiomata Rugby at their AGM on 30 November.

Clubs that have achieved their Bronze accreditation will proceed to work through the Silver accreditation.
