Newtown Union Health publishes its history
A book detailing the history of the Newtown Union Health Service (NUHS) is being launched on Friday, November 30.
The book, Health for the People, which has been published as part of the service’s 20th anniversary celebrations,
includes commentaries as well as lively profiles about those involved with the service over the years.
It has been edited by one of the service’s founding doctors, Kathy James.
The service grew out of the union movement’s desire to find a better way to ensure that those most in need received the
highest level of primary care available, writes Toby Regan, the service’s current Chairperson in the book’s foreword.
“In a national context, the development of NUHS, its partnership with other union health services, and its partnership
with other community controlled health services – especially Māori health services – has built a substantial network of
community-controlled services across the country.
“This network has been seen by governments from across the political spectrum as playing a key role in ensuring that the
most vulnerable New Zealand communities have access to health care.
“Furthermore it provided the blueprint for the primary health care strategy that is shaping the future of all the
nation’s primary health care services,” Dr Don Matheson, one of the service’s founding doctors and now Director
International Relations at the Ministry of Health, says in his introduction to the book.

The launch is to be held at the Trinity Union Church next to NUHS between 5 and 7 pm on Friday, November 30.
