Burnout approved but not foregone conclusion

While Council today gave approval, as owner of the land, for the temporary event Memorial Burnout to proceed, it made it very clear that before it can proceed it must meet stringent District Plan required approvals, Mayor Jenny Rowan said today.

“A majority of Council (7 votes to 3) voted in favour of giving the burnout organisers permission to use the Council-owned land but there is still some way to go for them to meet the overall requirements,” she said.

“They need to develop an acceptable Temporary Event Management Plan including a full Traffic Management Plan, noise management and security arrangements.

“They also plan to build a temporary concrete burnout pad which will require some earthworks and there are a number of issues that arise around siting the event in the sensitive dunes environment. This may trigger a resource consent process which will require some very stringent controls and public consultation.
The event is planned to occur from 5.00pm to 8.00pm on Saturday February 16 2008.

“The organisers will also be required to cover all the not inconsiderable costs of setting up and running the event as well as the cost of consultation.

“There’s quite a process to be followed before any rubber is burned off and the Council will keep people informed on each step of that process,” Mayor Rowan said.
