Wellington sky explodes with colour for Guy Fawkes
One of Wellington’s most colourful events, the Pelorus Trust Sky Show, returns to Wellington on Monday 5 November.
“The Sky Show is an iconic event – it attracts around 100,000 spectators from around the region and it is the first in a
brilliant series of events in Wellington this summer,” says Wellington City Council Event Coordinator Rebecca Hardie.
“This year’s Sky Show will be a massive event with fireworks being launched from two barges and a helicopter.”
This year’s show is the 13th Wellington Sky Show from fireworks maestro Robert McDermott. Robert has designed fireworks
displays for events such as the 2000 Sydney Olympics closing display from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“We’re pleased to have the helicopter back,” says Miss Hardie. “It’s had a lot of good feedback from the public.”
The Sky Show starts at 9pm and will run for about 15 minutes to a soundtrack broadcast on Classic Hits.
McDermott’s dazzling pyrotechnic effects feature thousands of star shells, comets, and roman candles, mixed with a
variety of exotic delights like “Double Red Hearts” and “10 x 10 shot Silver Fish Spit Pearls with Blue Tail”.
The best vantage points to view the fireworks are the waterfront and surrounding hills. Boating spectators looking for a
good viewing spot are asked to keep 300m away from the barges and keep their boat speed to a maximum of five knots.
