Hamilton city has elected Bob Simcock as mayor


Hamilton city has elected Bob Simcock as mayor.

Progressive results based on 96% of voting papers processed at 12noon today, has Bob Simcock elected with a resounding lead of over 10,000 votes more than nearest candidate Roger Hennerbry. Bob Simcock received 16,013 votes while Roger Hennerbry received 5,693 votes and Gordon Chesterman polled a close third to Hennebry with 4,533 votes.

Mr Simcock has held the position of Hamilton mayor for the last 5 months following the resignation of Michael Redman to take up the position of Hamilton City Council CEO.

Hamilton has elected two new city councillors both on the west ward. Kay Gregory was the highest polling Councillor with 11,429 votes and Angela O’Leary currently holds the sixth potion on the west ward with 4,941 votes. This seat being made available following Mr Simcock’s election to mayor. Ms O’Leary’s position will be confirmed only after final voting papers have been proceed by 7pm this evening due to a close margin to the next candidate.

All incumbent Councillors held their existing seats. Ewan Wilson and Grant Thomas did not stand for re-election.

Bob Simcock says he is delighted to be voted in as mayor by the people of Hamilton.

“It is a tremendous honour to be elected as Hamilton mayor. Being part of a fully unified and progressive Council over the last 3 years has been such a positive experience and it is gratifying to see that the people of Hamilton support the direction that has been taken.

“I also believe it is significant that every Councillor who stood for re-election will be joining me back at Council for the next term. Again this demonstrates in my view the confidence the Council has had from the public of Hamilton.”
