Tribute To Neil Morrison

We recently lost an old friend Neil Morrison. Neil was sent off in a most appropriate fashion at his Telstra Pacific Event Centre. His wife Gabrielle gave me an opportunity to speak which I appreciated very much. The one thing I did not mention and should have, was Neil’s love of singing. He and I performed a couple of well-known duets at a few Council functions. I will always remember how, in particular, Neil loved to rock out a bit of Elvis.

A decent and good man, Neil was loved and respected by his community and city.

Reputation

Politics and law have a lot in common. In both you can only succeed if you have a good reputation. Over the recent weeks, and now that voting has commenced, I have been struck by the number of leaders across the city who have shared their reputation with me by offering public support for my campaign. I am aware of a number of people who are voting in support based solely on those recommendations and in some cases on very little personal knowledge of me or my policies.

So to all, thank you for sharing your good and well-earned reputation with me. I value it highly.

Weymouth by the Sea

I had the last cottage meeting of the campaign last week. It was organised by my good friend Alan Johnson and held at the Weymouth boat club. About 20 people turned up, a good number for a cottage meeting, and we had a great discussion. While it was a cold night we soon warmed up and over 2 hours covered every issue of concern in the local community and the city.

The good thing about cottage meetings is that they provide opportunities for those who are initially shy to voice their questions and offer their perspectives in the more comfortable setting of the small group. I have loved these meetings and look forward to further opportunities if elected, to provide a weekly Mayoral meeting to enable our people to become more informed and engaged on issues of importance to them.

It’s about the future

We are in the second week of voting and there has been a lower than expected rate of return of votes. It is time to get onto your family and friends to encourage them to get their votes done and posted.

I was door knocking the other day, and I asked one woman whether she would vote she said “Oh yes I always vote, but I am not voting for my benefit. I am voting for my grandchildren.” She absolutely understood the importance of voting and picking the right representatives so that the inheritance of her grandchildren is secured and one they can be proud of.

Remember to spread the word that a vote for Len Brown is a vote to Move Manukau Forward.
