Man Shot By Police
A man has been fatally shot in Christchurch tonight after Police were called to a domestic incident. District Commander Sandra Manderson says that a homicide investigation and a separate Police Complaints Authority inquiry are now underway.
Police were called to a domestic incident at a house off Avonside Drive at 8.26pm tonight. A 37 year old man was reported to be smashing a flat with a hammer. He then left the house and walked to Stanmore Road.
Police were called and located the man attacking a vehicle on Stanmore Road with a weapon, allegedly a hammer.
The shooting occurred at about 8.36pm on Stanmore Road. A police officer was involved in the shooting. The man died soon after 9pm. His body is still at the scene.
A homicide inquiry has commenced led by Detective Inspector Greg Williams.
The name of the dead man has not yet been released.
"The homicide inquiry will be run parallel to the PCA inquiry using separate teams of staff," says District Commander Sandra Manderson.
The Police Complaints Authority have been advised and will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow morning.
The District Commander has called Police Kaumatua Reverend Maurice Gray to work with Police to ensure that the cultural process of tapu lifting will be carried out correctly and that the scene is being rendered neutral when the scene examination is complete.
