Calling all Santa's helpers
There is an early way to get in Santa's good books this year.
Volunteers are being sought for the 2007
Auckland Farmers Santa Parade
to help out on one of the
most special days of the year. Although the
Farmers Santa
Parade is still 10 weeks away, preparations for the
hugely
popular event are well underway.
The Auckland
Farmers Santa Parade takes place this year on 25
November
(rain date 2 December). Taking part in the
festive activities are 1,500
volunteers in costume and
4,000 helping in the parade.
>From dancers to clowns to
float drivers to Santa's helpers, out of the
goodness of
their hearts, members of the community give up their
time
for this iconic event. The Farmers Santa Parade is a
special event in
the region, beloved by hundreds of
thousands of Aucklanders and
volunteers who truly get to
share in the spirit of the season.
"We need volunteers to
help out in the parade and behind the scenes, to
spread
the Christmas spirit, and to make the day special for
the
countless spectators who love the parade," says
organiser Pam Glaser.
"We have some families who have been
helping out for 17 or 18 years but
we also get people
coming along for their first time which is great.
It
really is a fantastic occasion and such fun for the
children - we all
love being part of the Farmers Santa
Parade."
Behind the scene volunteers have to be older than
18 years and willing
to help as marshals, banner
carriers, costume minders and the like. Pam
is also
looking for people to be part of the Parade and dress in
fantasy
costume.
Volunteers are required from about
11am and will be free to go from
about 4pm.
The Parade
starts on the corner of Mayoral Drive and Cook Streets
before
heading down Queen Street to Customs Street and
then up Albert Street to
the corner of Wellesley Street.
"Kids and their caregivers can expect a procession of
fantasy floats,
fantastic festive favourites and
colourful costumes," Pam says.
"In addition to the jolly
man in his red suit, we've got some great new
floats
including a carnival float, a giant whale, and a magic
genie
float."
"There are bands and costume groups, new
characters and traditional
favourites, and of course the
Grand Marshall who shall remain secret
until closer to
the time."
Fittings for parade costumes take place in the
school holidays from 20
September to 8 October.
