Curtain rises on Auckland Heritage Festival
The Auckland Heritage Festival is in full swing, with more than 150 events celebrating Auckland’s unique social, built and natural heritage happening across the city until 30 September.
On Wednesday, 26 September, renowned historian Russell Stone will present his captivating new book Logan Campbell’s Auckland: Tales from the Early Years at a special event which marks both New Zealand Book Month and the Auckland Heritage Festival.
Mr Stone will be followed by special guests Bob Kerridge and Christine Caughey sharing their favourite tales of the families who helped shape the Auckland of today.
Aucklanders are also invited to come, hear and share at the CBD Slice of Life event on Sunday, 30 September, where guest speakers will reminisce about central city experiences from the 1940s to the 1970s.
Sharing their fond memories will be former Auckland mayor Dame Catherine Tizard, entertainer and broadcaster Don Linden, and the former president of the YWCA, Marie Taylor.
This event precedes the International Day of the Older Person on 1 October.
Fullers are offering 25 per cent off ferry fares to Rangitoto Island during the festival, allowing visitors to explore the island’s environmental heritage at their leisure or enjoy one of the guided walks on offer.
Other events taking place during the festival include a display of Rainbow Warrior paintings by late Auckland artist Nelson Thompson; a coach tour around some of the city’s iconic volcanoes and lesser known gems; and a display of Victorian childhood relics at Ewelme Cottage featuring clothing, games, books and toys.
The full programme of events is available at www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/heritagefestival or can be requested by phoning 379 2020. Bookings are essential for many events.
The Auckland Heritage Festival is produced by Auckland City Council and is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to protect heritage areas and buildings.
The festival also receives support from New Zealand Community Trust, Heritage Auckland, Solid Gold 93.8fm and Radio Live 100.6fm.
