400,000 buses of rubbish dumped
“New Zealanders throw away 3.6 million tonnes of rubbish every year. If we were to measure this in 9 tonne buses it would equate to 400,000 buses of rubbish - that's more than 1000 buses every day.  The crazy thing is that around 65 percent of our 'rubbish' could be recycled or composted instead” says Wellington City Council candidate, Roger Ellis.
 “We have a duty to the next generation to care for the environment and local government can play a leadership role” said Mr Ellis.
“Today I am announcing a new Four Point Plan on ways that we can respond at the local level to Climate Change” said Ellis.
The key elements of the Four Point Plan are:
Promote Public Space Recycling in conjunction with Ministry for the Environment;
Work with transport operators to improve reliability of Public Transport and to consider a new light rail service between Tawa and Wellington airport;
conduct a feasibility study on adopting Larger Recycling Bins to yield a greater volume of recycled material; and
support Product Stewardship campaigns to ensure that when products are sold there is a plan to deal with the consequent waste.
“The Council needs new people with fresh thinking.  After the election I plan to initiate discussions with other councillors to advance a programme of environmental sustainability” said Mr Ellis.
