Expand Powers Of Community Boards
Expand powers of Community Boards
"If corporate Auckland's plan for a Super City ever got off the drawing board, it would mean the death of Community Boards throughout our region," said Oliver Woods, who is running for the Mt Roskill Community Board as a representative of RAM - Residents Action Movement.
"RAM believes that Community Boards should be given extended powers and budgets, so that they have an expanded capacity to represent the grassroots. This in turn would enhance popular democracy."
"There are two clear options on the table to tackle local governance problems in Greater Auckland," said Oliver Woods.
"One is corporate Auckland's Super City, which would lead to even more bureaucracy and the business takeover of community assets."
"The other is the RAM Plan for popular democracy, which includes People's Assemblies, recall referendums and democratic control of community assets as well as enhancing the power of community boards."
"The RAM Plan would meet the aspirations of the majority of residents, while the Super City would maximise the profits and power of a tiny elite. We must defend our Community Boards from the corporate axe," said Oliver Woods.
The RAM Team is standing for 27 positions on the Auckland Regional Council, Auckland City Council and Community Boards, and the region's three District Health Boards.
