Tunnel Gully and Kaitoke Regional Park closed to dogs
Greater Wellington has closed Tunnel Gully and Kaitoke Regional Park to dogs after officers found 1080 pellets in public areas of both parks earlier this week.
It is not yet known how the bait got into these areas but it appears to have been deliberately placed in locations that are popular with visitors.
Greater Wellington has erected warning signs at the entrances of both parks, as well as the areas where the 1080 was found, telling people not to bring dogs into the parks. Dogs are very susceptible to poisoning from 1080.
Greater Wellington’s Catchment Management Divisional Manager Geoff Dick says: “Throughout the duration of Greater Wellington’s 1080 operations we have taken care to ensure that these areas are safe for people and dogs to use. Unfortunately, we now have to close both parks to dogs until we are satisfied that they are safe.”
Greater Wellington has informed police and the Medical Officer of Health of the incident, and has organised regular checks of tracks and picnic areas at both parks.
Greater Wellington has strict safety operating procedures for its possum control operations. Although every care is taken and the methods used present low levels of risk to the public and their pets, care must always be taken with young children and dogs.
People should adhere carefully to precautions and warning signs. If you suspect poisoning seek medical or veterinary help immediately.
