Local problems, local solutions

Media Statement
For Immediate Release

2 September 2007

Local problems, local solutions.

A safe community is one that looks out for itself. I am a strong supporter of residents and business associations, having had strong input into founding the Huntington Park R&R (Residents and Ratepayers), Greenmount East Tamaki Business Association and Chapel Park/Botany R&R. These organisations and similar others across our City, are critical in building safer, stronger community’s, particularly during the early stages of a community’s growth.

I also encourage the development of the Neighbourhood Watch and Crime Patrol models. They are effective and work as the neighbourhoods first line of local defence working beside the Police. A well organised community operating a watch with support from Crime Patrol and the Police has a much greater chance of being safer and free from burglaries and crime.

I will work to increase resourcing of both these initiatives to extend their reach and effectiveness.
