Christchurch: Soccer referee assaulted

PRESS RELEASE
Police were called to a fight at Elmwood Park at 3:30 pm between members of opposing sides in a Sunday league soccer competition. The clubs involved were New Brighton and Christchurch Chinese.
Acting Sergeant Ben FitzPatrick said during the incident a referee was assaulted by two players from the Christchurch Chinese team.
Two local men in there 20's have been charged with assault and will be appearing in court later in the week.
The referee suffered minor injuries and was shaken by the incident.
At the time there were a number of spectators and Police are calling for anyone who witnessed the attack on the referee to contact Mr FitzPatrick at the New Brighton Police Station on phone number 373 9100.
