Strong competition for Manukau local elections

More than 200 people have been nominated as candidates in Manukau city’s local government elections, to be held on Saturday 13 October.

A total of 219 nominations have been received for council, community board, health board and licensing trust positions, with sufficient nominations for an election in all seats.

When the deadline for nominations passed at midday today there were:
- 11 nominations for mayor
- 70 nominations for councillor
- 33 nominations for the Counties Manukau District Health Board
- 98 nominations for community boards
- 7 nominations for the Wiri Licensing Trust.

Manukau City Council Electoral Officer John Skelton says he is pleased with the level of interest from the community.

“With only 72 vacancies it’s going to be an exciting time for candidates and electors alike. I’m sure many of the candidates are already out in the community campaigning actively for support.

“Between now and 13 October it will be up to the candidates to catch voter attention, for that all important postal ballot when the voters will have their say. “

Comparisons from the 2004 elections include:
- 7 nominations for Mayor
- 60 nominations for Councillors
