DB Breweries pitch in to help Kaeo Rugby Club
Memo to Kaeo Rugby Club members: get out your gumboots and roll up your sleeves – DB Breweries has agreed to buy all the remaining concrete blocks you need to rebuild your flood-devastated club.
The Northland club’s premises were devastated by floods in March and then again in July. The club asked Kiwis to help out buy pledging $5 each to buy the concrete blocks needed to raise the clubhouse.
When DB Breweries managing director Brian Blake learned of the club’s plight he got straight on the phone and offered them the $10,000 to buy the remaining blocks.
“These guys really have had a tough time and when I saw the story on television last night I saw an opportunity for DB Breweries to assist,” Mr Blake says.
“Grass-roots rugby is at the heart of rural New Zealand. I grew up in Carterton and the rugby club performed an incredibly important role in the community. We want to put our money where our mouth is and help out.”
However, Mr Blake points out, the club still needs more funds for other renovations, and he urged Kiwis to dig into their pockets and help out.
Mr Blake says too often companies sponsor the high-profile teams, forgetting about the network of smaller clubs which often struggle for funding.
Committee spokeswoman Clare Farrell said the generosity of companies and people has been overwhelming: "It's fantastic what DB has done. We are so lucky. For our little town to get $10,000 form someone like DB is amazing," she says.
