New pedestrian bridge for Whitford Village
Work is to begin shortly on a new pedestrian footbridge at Whitford Village following the awarding of a contract to Te Ngahere Ltd.
The project is a joint venture between Manukau City Council and the Whitford Residents and Ratepayers Association, which has contributed one third of the cost of the project. The association’s contribution has been made possible through a funding grant from the Whitford Community Charitable Trust.
Part of the Whitford Village Enhancement Project commissioned in 1998, the bridge will improve access from Whitford’s historic Wharf Road area to the recently completed Village Green, as well as providing another link in the area’s network of recreational trails.
Development Manager for Manukau Parks Johan Ferreira says the project is a great example of council and community working together. “Parks staff and members of the Clevedon Community Board and Whitford Residents and Ratepayers Association have worked hard to progress the improvements at the village. When completed Whitford will have a fantastic recreational facility.”
The project demonstrates council’s commitment to ‘Making Connections’, Manukau Parks’ strategy aimed at providing coastal and riparian access and protection, as well as connecting parks and communities.
