Auckland City Libraries launches Hokianga exhibition
Auckland City Libraries launched a free exhibition at the Central City Library on Saturday, 14 July that is a tribute to the history, the place, and the people of Hokianga. The exhibition runs from 16 July until 29 September.
In the spirit of ka hononga tangata katoa, bringing all peoples together, Waipapa Marae hosted a powhiri where Ngati Whatua shared stories and the history of their ancestral lands before a formal blessing at the library officially opened the exhibition.
Whina Te Whiu, Auckland City Libraries’ Mâori services manager, says: “Hokianga is the result of many months of hard work, dedication and passion from the Te Roopu Ratonga Mâori team at libraries. We are very proud to say that Hokianga is the largest exhibition ever shown at Auckland City Libraries, but we could not have done it without the kind support and generosity of private family collections who lent us many taonga for display.”
The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public events and activities for all ages. Highlights include a Hokianga Rocks competition for 5 to 18-year-olds, a music performance by Te Ara Toi and a lecture series starting 23 July.
The public are also invited to add comments and stories to the Hokianga exhibition blog at www.aclhokiangarocks.blogspot.com, which can be accessed from the libraries’ website.
Hokianga is an insightful exhibition that aims to highlight the significant interrelationship of the whakapau taniwha (environment), whakapau ariki (authority) and tangata (people) of Hokianga Harbour.
