Update to Leisure Centre incident

Hi

Please find below an update to the incident at the Leisure Centre yesterday evening.

--

The minor chlorine leak occurred during the 3-monthly maintenance of the pool filter system due to a communications error between maintenance contractors and staff.

A full investigation was conducted by Council’s Health and Safety Advisor which resulted in a number of actions to ensure such an incident cannot occur again. Department of Labour Inspectors were also on-site. Council’s actions include: љ

- Installation of an interlock mechanism so that booster pumps cannot be turned on while the chlorine pump is shut down.

- A lock placed on the chlorine valves during future maintenance.

- A review of the communications requirements between contractors and staff to ensure all parties are fully informed during future maintenance.

We have been able to contact all of the families involved. We understand that all the children have now been discharged from hospital and we wish them all a speedy recovery.

Council will continue to be in touch with the families. љ
