Makeover for Devonport walkway
North Shore City media release
Makeover for Devonport walkway June 18, 2007
The walkway between Vauxhall Rd and the sportsfields at Fort Takapuna is set to have a makeover now that it is under North Shore City Council’s care. Approval was given at the recent community services and parks committee meeting for the council to license the walkway from the Royal New Zealand Navy. The walkway is grassed, 3m wide and about 200m long.
North Shore City’s parks department will use funds provided by both the Devonport Community Board and Devonport Rotary Club to install a secure 1.8m-high pool fence on the boundary between the Navy base and the walkway. Community services and parks committee chairman, Margaret Miles, says it is great to see the local community getting behind this project and owning it.
“This walkway links people with one of the most spectacular ocean views in our city. The upgrades will make it easier for more people to enjoy this magic spot,” says Councillor Miles who paid tribute to the leadership role played by the local community board.
North Shore City Council will hold the licence for a period of one year which will then be renewed on an annual basis. Under the terms of the licence, the council is also responsible for the future maintenance of the walkway.
